UK money mule cases surge 69% in first half of 2026

Cifas figures cited by AML Intelligence show more than 13,000 money mule recordings to the UK's fraud database in the first half of 2026, a 69% year on year rise.

What happened

Money mule cases recorded to the UK’s National Fraud Database (NFD) rose by 69% in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025, according to Cifas, the UK’s fraud prevention body. AML Intelligence, citing Cifas figures published on 5 August 2026, reported more than 13,000 recordings to the database over that period. The NFD is the shared system UK firms use to log fraud cases. Cifas has not published a further breakdown here.

Why it matters

A majority rise in one fraud category, logged to a national shared database in a single year, is a meaningful signal on its own. That reading is analysis, not a claim made by Cifas or AML Intelligence beyond the two published figures. It suggests mule recruitment and account misuse are outpacing the controls meant to catch them at onboarding and in ongoing monitoring. The source data does not say which channel, age group, or product is driving the increase. Firms should treat that gap as something to investigate, not assume.

Practitioner angle

  • Tighten onboarding checks on new accounts that receive large transfers within days of opening.
  • Watch for round tripping and same day pass through activity, not just high transaction values.
  • Cross check applicants against the NFD or an equivalent fraud database, and repeat the check periodically, not only at onboarding.
  • Train fraud and frontline teams to spot mule recruitment language on social media.

Most important: treat a sudden spike in low value, high velocity transfers through newly opened accounts as a mule signal first, not ordinary customer behaviour.
